Jul 19, Leo Hmelnitsky: War-torn Ukraine from the eyes of its victims

Outrageous news and images of the Russian aggression in Ukraine continue to flood TV, print and online media. This session will be focused on a few stories about a small group of brave volunteers who rushed to the border when the war broke out, and the story of one family's escape from the clutches of the aggressors.  In fact, we are in the process of making a movie - watch the trailer: http://www.outfromtheashes.film

Leo was born and raised in Moscow and moved to the United States after completing his Electrical Engineering degree, searching for economic success and religious freedom. Luckily, America offered both. An accomplished Harvard educated financier, who runs a venture capital and multi-family real estate fund lives in Walnut Creek with his wife and two children. The whole family is deeply involved in building the Jewish community for FSU (Former Soviet Union) immigrants, ensuring that traditions and values are passed from one generation to the next. He is also active on the board of directors at the local Jewish day school and the JCC. In his ample spare time, Leo enjoys reading, hiking and hosting people.
